Hoylake Cottage Nursing Home is a modern, purpose built care home providing much needed nursing and dementia care for the elderly. The care home comprises 62 bright and spacious rooms that benefit from en-suite shower facilities, 22 of which are registered for people suffering with dementia. The new nursing home was built to replace the Victorian nursing home that was no longer fit for purpose. The existing home had to be kept operational to avoid disrupting the residents during construction.
The new site was located in the existing garden area, resulting in a sensitive and tight working area. Further challenges were presented by the need to spread accommodation over 3 floors. The solution to these challenges was to build around the existing building and incorporate the second storey within the roof space. The mass of the building was broken down into different elements to integrate the building into a mainly Edwardian residential area. Traditional brick and render treatment was used for the residential areas and curtain walling for the public day spaces.
Internally one of the aims of the design was to provide as much choice as possible to the residents. Therefore sitting rooms with different aspects are situated on each floor, some overlooking landscaped gardens, some overlooking the adjacent park and some overlooking the public spaces are provided.
Great design emphasis was given to provide as much natural light within the building as possible by using all the light from the glazed curtain walling and then with the introduction of glazed internal screens transferring it from these areas to the circulation spaces. This also aided orientation for this client group by providing visual markers.
