GMP Littleborough Police Station

Following the successful completion of a rigorous prequalification exercise McGoff and Byrne gained entry on to the Greater Manchester Police approved contractor list. Multiple projects were subsequently allocated to McGoff and Byrne by the lead consultants Michael Hyde Associates and WS Atkins, this collaboration became the catalyst of a successful Integrated Supply Team for the projects involved.

One of the main factors involved in GMP projects is the requirement for all staff and operatives to pass a GMP Vetting process for security clearance. We have successfully worked with GMP on approximately 12 projects between 2004 and 2009.

The Littleborough project was a phased redevelopment as the station remained live through the project. During the initial Integrated Supply Team meetings it became apparent that the most effective route through the phasing was to re-house the live station into portable buildings on the main car park.

The 1st phase (6 weeks, fast-track) therefore involved working alongside GMP to prepare the main car park for the temporary buildings, which included extensive foundation works / retaining walls and resurfacing as well as bringing in the required services and setting up the temporary buildings. We successfully ensured due to the sensitivity of the project that we were in regular contact with both the estates department and the end users to avoid conflicts of activity.

Once the GMP staff had been re-housed, the extensive redevelopment could be undertaken in phase 2 (28 weeks), which involved extending and refurbishing the existing station, including re-roofing, re-fenestration, structural repair and subsequent fitting out to 'turn-key' status. The phasing worked extremely well as we had managed to establish separate access to the site for both parties. The building was also extensively insulated and fitted with efficient heating systems linked by BMS back to HQ monitoring.

The final phase (4 weeks) involved the relocation of the GMP staff back into the new building and removal of the portable buildings and completion of the landscaping works.

During the course of this complex project we were awarded the redevel- opment of Leigh sub-divisional HQ in Leigh, Lancashire. This £2.2 million, 50 week project again involved complex phasing of our works in 5 phases in a live Police station environment, a 24 hour operation. This project was successfully completed with skill and care some 6 weeks ahead of time and within budget. Extensive liaison was required as GMP staff had to be relocated at the beginning and end of each phase. GMP staff, were pleased with the way our management team conducted themselves 'professionally and sensitively throughout the project.'
