McGoff and Byrne Ltd, a proactive Buy Recycled Code member, has benefitted greatly this year from the Code’s Sustainable Procurement consultancy support.
Having won a contract to design and build, and provide facilities management services for 3 new generation care homes in the South Manchester area, McGoff and Byrne sought assistance from Envirolink Northwest with their planned activities to reduce carbon, waste and water on the schemes and help them achieve their ambitious target to meet the standards required by the NWDA Sustainable Buildings Policy.
Through engagement with the Buy Recycled Code team and the sustainable procurement consultancy support programme, McGoff & Byrne has considered all aspects of the project including procurement, construction methods and the use of recycled materials. The findings have been compiled into a Holistic Sustainability Strategy that encompasses local employment, training and community engagement considerations associated with both the build and operation of the care homes.
McGoff & Byrne has a strong desire in all of their contracts to demonstrate sustainability and has been rewarded by winning two high profile construction awards including ‘Best Practice Award’ at the North West Regional Construction Awards and ‘Sustainability Award’ at the RICS North West Awards. This year alone the company has procured over £58,000 worth of recycled material resulting in 1,940 tonnes of aggregates, concrete, bricks and paper being diverted from landfill.
The consultancy support involved an awareness-raising session, an assessment against the Flexible Framework and an impact analysis for the procurement packages of the care homes. This information is now embedded in the tangible Holistic Sustainability Strategies for the schemes.
McGoff & Byrne are looking specifically at the care home projects to expand their sustainability considerations. If by adopting this approach it is successful in saving money, increasing efficiency and meeting the clients’ needs then there will be a plan to adopt the ethos through the whole organisation. Speaking of its recent successes, Dave McGoff, Group Commercial Director of McGoff & Byrne stated “Envirolink has provided us with the knowledge capital to become an innovative sustainable service provider within the construction industry. Their support has assisted our growth over the last six months winning contracts with good quality environmentally conscious clients. We have embedded robust mechanisms within the business that ensures all environmental aspects and impacts of our service offering are fully considered and appropriately rationalised”
Professor Andrew Thomas, Chief Executive, The Centre for Construction Innovation, said; “McGoff and Byrne has single-handedly demonstrated that by embedding sustainability into the core of your business, it is possible to break into new sectors, get onto public sector framework agreements and ultimately become a more profitable organization, something which has been proven in the company's growth figures and contract wins”
It is anticipated that as a result of the support received from Envirolink Northwest and the success of the care home projects, McGoff & Byrne will be able to increase their use of recycled products even further next year.
