Sustainability Workshop with Great Sankey High School
31St March 2011
Model Students show real talent at Great Sankey High School! As part of Sciences and Engineering Week 2011 McGoff and Byrne attended a Sustainability Workshop with 30 students from Great Sankey High School.
Upon being awarded the contract to design and build a new £4.5m sixth form block on the grounds of the existing school, McGoff and Byrne established an engagement strategy with the school.
The workshop was held as part of Science and Engineering week, with a group of Year 9 students.
The day started with a combined careers and sustainability presentation by the team, the students then split in to groups and were set the challenge of designing a new Sustainable Great Sankey leisure centre.
The groups produce drawings and 3D models and at the end of the day, presented there designs back to the group.
The pupils involved were an absolute credit to the school; they were all enthusiastic and came up with some spectacular ideas for the sustainable building. The presentations were all of a very high standard and fantastic teamwork skills were demonstrated by all - there wasn’t a single student who didn’t get involved. All in all, it was very hard to judge the winning team! I thoroughly enjoyed the day and hope that we may have inspired a few of the students to think about a career in the industry”

Students from the school have also been involved in the production of the McGoff and Byrne newsletters that go out to local residents on a monthly basis, and back in December a design workshop was held so the students could provide influence the buildings interior design.
“We get to design the interior of key rooms and the design of one of the main walls in the 6th form” said one student.
Students were provided with A1 sheets of paper and a pack of colour swatches, furniture examples and precedent images. They worked in pairs discussing and sketching ideas for the atrium, cafe, LRC and WCs.
The project Architects then summarised the responses from the students in order to get a clearer understanding of how they would like to see their new spaces finished and furnished.
“It is brilliant that the students can have an input into the design of the sixth form, they’ll be the ones using it so they should get a say” Responded the head of sixth form, Mrs Code “they’ll have a sixth form they can be proud of”.
